What is Video Counselling

Video counselling is a form of online therapy conducted via platforms like Zoom, offering a unique and effective way to receive support. By engaging in video calls, clients and therapists interact in real-time, mirroring the in-person counselling experience as closely as possible through the screen of a computer, tablet, or smartphone.

Understanding Counselling

Counselling provides a platform to discuss troubling issues, encompassing challenging emotions and anxious thoughts. It's an opportunity to explore your thoughts, feelings, behaviours, dreams, and worries in a secure, professional, and confidential environment.   Counselling does not involve offering advice; it's about supporting you through the exploration and comprehension of the challenges you face. This might involve uncovering inner strengths, developing new coping strategies, fostering acceptance, or navigating towards change.

Approach to Therapy

Although I offer traditional talking therapy, I may also introduce creative materials to enhance your experience. It's essential to note that using creative materials is entirely your choice, but you don't need to be an artist, and your creative spark doesn't need to shine brightly; it’s all about expression. Creativity can offer deeper insights, particularly when words alone may not suffice. These interventions might involve working with pens, paper, sand trays, cards, and more.  If we are working over zoom you may want to choose to bring your own creative mediums. Whether we use creative techniques or not, I believe that the therapy should adapt to you, not the other way around.

Advantages of Online Counselling

Choosing online counselling presents several advantages:

  • Simulates In-Person Interaction: The closest experience to face-to-face counselling, fostering a sense of connection and rapport between client and therapist.

  • Convenience and Accessibility: Accessible from any location where you feel comfortable, eliminating travel time, costs, and the need to sit in waiting rooms.

  • Overcoming Barriers: Removes barriers that might prevent in-person attendance, making therapy more accessible to a broader audience.

  • Comfort and Openness: Creates a comfortable environment for sharing sensitive issues, fostering openness and comfort in discussing personal concerns.

Considerations for online counselling

However, several considerations should be kept in mind before engaging in video counselling:

  • Privacy and Space: Ensure a private space free from interruptions, equipped with necessary technology (laptop, tablet, smartphone) and a stable internet connection.

  • Comfort with Technology: Ensure you are comfortable using online technology.

  • Emotional Comfort: There are potential emotional challenges after sessions due to increased comfort in one's environment leading to oversharing quicker than one might in in-person counselling.

  • Materials for Creativity: If engaging in creative work during sessions, prepare necessary materials for your use.

Online security and privacy

While 'Zoom' is utilised with encryption measures in place, absolute security cannot be guaranteed. I take every precaution available to me to ensure session privacy is maintained, such as not using a shared computer.

Clients should also take personal precautions to maintain their privacy, such as avoiding the use of shared computers and understanding the privacy statements of platforms used for sessions.

Additionally, A Deeper Sense's privacy statement can be accessed at the bottom of the page for further information.
